There are a number of ways you can transport your bike in, on or behind your vehicle:
- In the boot!
- On a boot mounted cycle carrier
- On the roof
- On the towbar/towball
- On a specialist trailer
In the boot...
In reality, not very practical. Very few vehicles have a boot large enough to accomodate one cycle let alone enough for the family unless they are folders or you disassemble them quite some way. If you have a crewcab / pickup then the "boot" is somewhat bigger! There are specialist mounts for pick-ups.
Boot mounted cycle racks...
Rear boot lid mounted racks are the most commonly seen method of transporting bikes.

Roof mounted cycle racks...
If you have roof bars on your vehicle, there are very easy to use carriers which can be attached to the roofbars to hold bicycles.
You will need one carrier for each bike.

Towball and Towbar mounted cycle racks...
If you already have a towbar / towball fitted to your car, racks are available which clamp onto the tow fixings providing a stable platform for carrying bikes...
Some you can tow with, others not.

If you have more than four bikes to carry, unless you combine methods above, your only real option is a cycle transport trailer.
